Phyllostachys aurea
Phyllostachys aurea, one of the most common bamboos has many desirable qualities. Most noted for the unusual tortoise shell look that can be present on some of the culms.
Phyllostachys aurea can also make a wonderful privacy hedge, however it is more likely to spread, and its drought tolerance means that lack of water is not going to inhibit it as much as some other bamboo. One key feature to a Phyllostachys aurea hedge is that this plant tends to branch almost to ground level, giving you more privacy in areas where you may need it.
almost impossible to see thanks to bamboo, this urban yard is surrounded by houses
The culm wood on this bamboo is strong, making it a good choice for craft purposes. In general, Phyllostachys aurea is a beautiful bamboo, with many useful qualities, if care is taken to contain it.
