Possibly one of the most sought after bamboos, this beautiful type has allot to be desired- cums emerge bright green/gold, then mellow to a deep "old gold" color. Leaves have an occasional white stripe, and some culms have random green pinstripes near the base. The highlight, however, is the zig zag pattern that a small percentage of canes grow into.
The center culms in this picture represent an older cane, left, and a new cane, right- note the color
Allowing the grove to grow for several years, then thinning back to mostly the zig zag culms produces an eye catching display.
Although Phylostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' starts life a little "floppy", it matures into a very upright plant, and makes a wonderful tall privacy screen. Using a wooden fence as a backdrop, and clearing the branches from the lower portion of the culms is sure to dramatize your backyard.
